The purpose of the book is to offer in a single volume a a systematic and exhaustive account of the remarkably enormous contributions of the prominent savants of Bengal towards the resurgence and advancement of Buddhist studies in India since the establishment of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in Calcutta in 1784 by Sir William Jones till date. Besides the book aims at highlighting the role and contribution of the three celebrated societies of Calcutta: The Asiatic Society of Bengal, The Maha Bodhi Society and The Buddhist Text Society in resuscitating and popularizing Buddhist studies through their research journals and missionary activities.
